<p> "Music was always what I wanted to do," says Mariah Carey,
20. Imitating singers she heard on the radio, the little girl
with the great big voice captivated visitors to her New York
City home. With coaching from her opera-singer mother, she
developed a powerhouse style, soaring from a low growl to an
ethereal wail. Now her full five octaves can be heard on an
album titled simply Mariah Carey, released last week. How did
she come by the unusual first name? Her mom thought it sounded
good for the stage and, jokes Carey, she "had a plan." It
worked.
