  18. <p>     "Music was always what I wanted to do," says Mariah Carey,
  19. 20. Imitating singers she heard on the radio, the little girl
  20. with the great big voice captivated visitors to her New York
  21. City home. With coaching from her opera-singer mother, she
  22. developed a powerhouse style, soaring from a low growl to an
  23. ethereal wail. Now her full five octaves can be heard on an
  24. album titled simply Mariah Carey, released last week. How did
  25. she come by the unusual first name? Her mom thought it sounded
  26. good for the stage and, jokes Carey, she "had a plan." It
  27. worked.
